Critical Acclaim for La Damnation de Faust at the Opéra de Nice

John Irvin’s most recent success at L’Opéra de Nice has earned him critical acclaim…

Faust is entrusted to the American tenor John Irvin, who composes a character both distant and moving, dark as a temperamental child the romantic century. The emotion, constant, always remains elegant because contained by the internalized modesty but fighting against itself, between its part of light and shadow. The voice is thin, sometimes ethereal, echoing certain sequences of the Berliozian orchestration, but always well placed in the treble. It blossoms with a beautiful golden sound with the progress of the drama. The phrasing is neat...finally, he is the only one to do without partition and move freely between Mephisto and Marguerite.
